Shining a Light on Surgical Births, Informed Choices, and Empowered Healing
Each April, we observe Cesarean Awareness Month—a time to reflect on the growing rate of cesarean births, the experiences of those who give birth via surgery, and the importance of informed, respectful care. Whether a cesarean is planned, unplanned, or even unwanted, every mom deserves education, support, and healing.
The Reality Behind the Numbers
In the United States, more than 32% of all births are cesarean births. That means 1 in 3 moms give birth through major abdominal surgery—a rate that has remained consistently high over the past two decades.
While cesareans can absolutely be life-saving in certain medical situations, the World Health Organization recommends that cesarean rates not exceed 10–15% at a population level. This suggests that many cesareans may be unnecessary—driven by non-medical factors such as hospital policies, provider preferences, or systemic routines rather than true need.
Why Cesarean Awareness Matters
Cesarean Awareness Month aims to:
🔹 Raise awareness about the health impacts of cesareans on both mothers and babies
🔹 Empower families to make informed choices about their childbirth options
🔹 Reduce unnecessary cesareans through education and advocacy
🔹 Promote positive birth experiences—no matter how babies are born
At its heart, this month is about ensuring that every parent’s experience is heard, respected, and supported.
Key Focus Areas for Change
✨ 1. Reducing Preventable Cesareans
Many cesareans are done due to “failure to progress,” suspected big babies, or routine repeat surgeries. By encouraging evidence-based care, continuous labor support, and non-surgical comfort techniques, we can lower these numbers.
✨ 2. Understanding the Patient Experience
Cesarean birth is often treated as routine, but it’s a major surgery—one that comes with both physical and emotional healing. Cesarean Awareness Month reminds us to honor that experience and provide emotional support, trauma-informed care, and postpartum resources.
✨ 3. Advocating for VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean)
For many women, a vaginal birth after cesarean is a safe and empowering option. Yet, access to VBAC is limited in many hospitals. Promoting VBAC awareness helps moms reclaim autonomy and explore their full range of choices.
