You are an important member of your health care team! You should ask questions about anything you do not understand. If you need your provider to explain something in a different way, ask them to do so.
You have the right to refuse treatment if you are able to understand your health condition, your treatment options, and the risks and benefits of each option. Your doctor or other health care provider may tell you they do not think this is the best choice for you.
But, your health care providers should not try to force you to have a treatment you do not want to have. It is important to be involved in the informed consent process. After all, you are the one who will receive the treatment if you give your consent.
You are always in charge of the decisions made during your pregnancy, birth and your baby’s care no matter what policies or procedures are in place. If a complication arises you will still consult with the medical care providers to make your decisions based on what is best for your family.
Remember to Use B.R.A.I.N.D.! Ask about:
- Benefits– What are the benefits? What do my baby or I gain from this?
- Risks– What are all of the risks?
- Alternatives– What are all of the alternatives? What risks do they present?
- Intuition– What is your gut feeling? Does this procedure make sense?
- Nothing– What happens if we do nothing and allow some time to think?
- Discuss and Decide– WE will discuss this issue and let the care providers know our decision.
Nurturing Informed Choices for You and Your Baby
Since pregnancy, birth, and early parenting are deeply personal journeys, making informed choices along the way can help you feel more confident and supported. Here are some gentle, empowering ways to guide your decision-making process:
🌼 Understanding Informed Consent
Informed consent means that you’re lovingly invited into the conversation about your care. You deserve to understand the benefits, risks, and alternatives for any procedure or recommendation—including the choice to wait or do nothing at all.
🌼 Exploring Your Birth Options
Whether you feel most comfortable in a hospital, a birth center, or at home, each setting offers unique possibilities. Learning about them can help you choose the one that aligns best with your needs and values.
🌼 Creating a Birth Plan
Your birth preferences are important. A birth plan is a thoughtful way to express your hopes for labor, birth, and postpartum care. It also helps your care team honor your wishes with clarity and compassion.
🌼 Having Open, Respectful Communication
It’s okay to ask questions—lots of them. Keep an open dialogue with your care provider so you always feel informed, seen, and heard. You deserve to understand everything that’s happening every step of the way.
🌼 Welcoming Support Into Your Journey
Consider inviting a doula, supportive partner, or trusted loved one to walk beside you. Having someone you trust to help you navigate information and choices can make all the difference.
🌼 Postpartum Considerations
Gently explore newborn care options such as delayed cord clamping, skin-to-skin bonding, feeding plans, and vaccinations. Your loving attention to these decisions helps set the tone for your baby’s early care.
🌼 Trusting Your Inner Wisdom
You know yourself and your baby better than anyone else. Your intuition is a powerful guide—listen to it and trust what feels right for you both.
Gentle Tips for Navigating Your Journey:
✨ Stay Curious: Read, research, and explore—books, trusted websites, and personal stories can offer comfort and clarity.
✨ Prenatal education: Prenatal classes can be both educational and reassuring, offering tools and confidence as you prepare for birth.
✨ Build a Connection with Your Provider: Choose someone who respects your voice and values your input—you’re a team.
✨ Write it Down: Write your hopes and preferences in a birth plan or journal, and share it with those supporting you.
✨ Remember: You Have Rights: Every decision is yours to make. You always have the right to say yes, no, or “I need more time.”
Remember that you’re doing such an incredible job as you research information for your pregnancy, birth, baby’s care, and postpartum. Trust yourself, seek support when needed, and know that your love and care are already shaping a beautiful beginning for you and your baby. 💗
